THE FUNCTION OF A ROMAN KEY

This is a story or better a reproduction attempt of how a roman door locker (before 19th century) used to function. One of the things archeologist found in archeological important excavation places in Switzerland such as Augst (Augusta Raurica), is the roman key. It looks like a hook and is out of metal – that’s why it’s still there, but a little oxydized of course. So where is the rest of the lock system? It must have been out of wood, because there is no evidence of another part of the locker. How did the romans lock their doors? This is what I tried to find out and wanted to explain. I developed a theory of how it could have worked and visualized it in 3D to optimize the understanding of the open/lock-process.

THE LEATHERBACK SEATURTLE

My final work to get the degree in Bachelor of Arts was about a 3D visualization of the leatherback seaturtle in order to show the shape and colour through a QTVR-movie. This format allows you to explore the seaturtle from different angles. With the mouse you can click-and-drag-to-rotate the movie to get more insight of the animal. Using this method I wanted to show the user a modern method to understand a complex shape. Below there are shown some steps of the huge procedure of visualization – beginning with some sketches of the leatherback seaturtle hatchlings to get a certain feeling for the shape, structures and textures I also publish some realisation aspects with the 3D software MAYA and the final results with some stills in this post. For the main product – the QTVR movie – you need to be patient. It has a long loading time, but once it’s loaded you are free to explore the leatherback seaturtle in its shape and texture.
